Since we only had one meeting each of these months, this is the combined 2007 August, September and October edition of the WESTLAKE TOWN CRIERS NEWLETTER.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Here are some highlights from the August, September and October meetings:

8/6/07

  • The most significant thing discussed was whether or not to have a meeting on Labor Day, September 3.  It was decided not to have one since most of the members had “FAMILY” commitments.
  • There were 21 members present, and Roger Cooley’s name was drawn.  Roger was not present so the pot now stands at $80.
  • 9/17/07
    • We received a very nice Thank You from WTBS-TV for all our financial support.
    • There was a great deal of discussion concerning the upcoming Christmas Tree Lighting at Crocker Park and our participation with respect to our announcing Mr. & Mrs. Westlake at the event.  Jeff Neverman volunteered to talk to Mayor Clough concerning the event.  Jeff is to get back to the membership at the next meeting.
    • All were reminded that the reception for this year’s Mr. & Mrs. Westlake, Roger & Lollie Cooley, starts at 7:00pm on October 22nd at Mahle’s restaurant.
    • There were 23 members present, and Jeff Zemito’s name was drawn. Unlucky for the rest of us, Jeff was present and took home $103.
  • 10/1/07
    • The treasury balance as of Oct. 1st is $4628.08.
    • The Nov. 19th 7-CARD STUD fund raiser is being replaced by TEXAS HOLD-EM. Details will be worked out by/at the Nov. 5th meeting.  We all need to get behind this event and sell tickets.
    • In place of our Oct. 15th meeting, the Mr.  & Mrs. Westlake Reception will be held. Due to scheduling conflicts, the reception is on Oct. 22nd.  (NO MEETING ON THE 15TH)
    • Since Bob Duale signed up for food on Nov. 19th, and that’s now the TEXAS HOLD-EM fund raiser night, he has been moved to the Dec. 3rd night for food. Is that OK Bob?
    • There’s a summary of Jeff Neverman’s meeting with Mayor Clough concerning Mr. & Mrs. Westlake on page 2.
    • The continued discussion of Mr. & Mrs. Westlake brought up a number of other issues that could/will have a major impact on the future well-being of this organization.
    • For starters, the following taskings resulted:
    • Committee chairpersons are to provide duties, tasks and a timeline of their committee to John Basch by Dec. 17th, the last meeting in Dec.
    • Officers are to document all their responsibilities and provide that to the President by Dec. 17th, the last meeting in Dec.
    • The date for the Christmas Party has been set for Dec. 8th.  All we need now is a place. Do we have ANY VOLUNTEERS or is this another tradition like the Clam Bake that will die?
    • There were 23 members present, and Pat LaVecchia’s name was drawn. Pat was not present so the pot grows.
  • To all Town Criers:

During our last meeting a discussion was held regarding Mr. & Mrs. Westlake and the move to Crocker Park two years ago. Some feel we are not getting the proper recognition for them at the new venue, while some point out that at the old place (City Hall) we got almost no one to attend.

I was asked to represent us and visit the Mayor to see what he thought and what our options might be in regard to these issues. My meeting was held today and here are the results.

We agreed that the first year at Crocker Park was a success considering the number of people attending and the time allotted for us. Last year was not the same. The Mayor feels we were shorted ( and he was also) because Stark was mad at everyone in the city after losing the Clinic deal and wanted to show us he was in charge. The Mayor feels that Stark is probably over that issue now. We all realize that Crocker Park and ALL its events are retail oriented and we will have to deal with that, but we also have had miserable results over the past 10 years or so at City Hall.

The Mayor is willing to review moving it back to City Hall if we want, but we both think our results will be no different than in the past. He told me this morning that he will talk to the people in charge at Crocker Park to make sure they know how important Mr. & Mrs. Westlake is to our community and to him, thus it should be important to them. It shows their community spirit, enthusiasm and commitment. We feel it is too late to do anything else this year.

For next year however, we had a very positive discussion. The Mayor suggested that we start much earlier and have an article ready for the Westlake Newsletter, which is published once a season. We would need to have one ready for the August newsletter and he will make sure it is in there. Also we need to get an up to date listing of all the organizations in the city and send them a letter no later that the first of August. We now don’t send out anything until September, which is too late for most volunteer organizations to react. This list is available through our library. We also discussed having it put up on cable through our City Hall Community bulletin board and through the schools on WHBS TV.

The Mayor and I both think that if we do what was suggested above, our results will be greater that in the past and we will put Mr. & Mrs. Westlake back into prominence once again.

    Respectfully Submitted by, Jeff Neverman

    EDITOR’S NOTE:

Over the next couple of months, things may or may not happen that could determine the future of the Town Criers. It is important that as many members as possible attend the remaining meetings and participate in the discussions that will help reshape the group.

Granted, we are a very layed-back group that raises several thousand dollars and does good things for the Youth and Seniors of Westlake. Some may think that things are OK just as they are, but due to this attitude some of our traditions have disappeared.  One of things we have to ask ourselves: What is the perception of the Town Criers within the community?  Do we even care?

Attend our next meeting on Nov. 5th.  We need to hear from everyone.
